Burglary Prevention Tips

Prevent Home Burglaries

  • Keep your home safe by locking doors and windows and turning on your alarm.
  • Leave a light on along with a radio or TV.  If possible leave a care in the driveway.  Give the appearance that someone is home.
  • Stop mail and newspaper deliveries when you are away.
  • Do not leave empty electronic/game boxes on your curb for garbage pick-up.  Break the boxes down and place them inside garbage bags.
  • Do not watch TV at night with the blinds open.
  • Report juveniles who are not in school during school hours.
  • If you see people knocking on doors –report it to police immediately.  Be ready to provide a description of what they are wearing, height, weight, hair style, and type of vehicle and TAG#.
  • Report any suspicious persons or vehicles in the neighborhood to Police immediately.  If you don’t take the time to do so –you may be the next victim.  Look out for your neighbors.
  • Teach juvenile family members they should not tell friends about valuables in their homes including game systems.
  • Stress to youth the importance of not allowing acquaintances in the home without a parent present.

Prevent Vehicle Burglaries

  • Park in a well lit area with plenty of activity.
  • DO NOT leave your purse/wallet in your vehicle.  Burlars know to look under the seat.
  • DO NOT leave cell phones, GPS, or laptop computers in your vehicle –ever.
  • Burglars are watching you walk into daycares and gyms waiting to steal your purses, wallets, cell phones, GPS, and laptop computers.
  • Burlars are watching you while you carry in the groceries or children.  Before you reach the door, the theif can be in your vehicle removing valuables.  It only takes 30 seconds.
  • DO NOT place valuable itmes in your trunk when arriving to a destination. Suspect may observe you put a purse in your trunk and later break the vehicle window to hit the trunk button and gain access to valuables.
  • While running errands, it may be better to take on ly a cell phone, ID, and a debit card in your pocket.
